Western
Europe Digital STB, PVR, and TV Adapter Forecast and Analysis,
2002-2007
This provides IDC's analysis and forecast for digital
set-top boxes (STBs), personal video recorders (PVRS),
TV adapters, and DVD players incorporating DTV tuners,
in Western Europe. Shipments and forecasts are provided
for equipment intended to receive pay TV and FTA digital
terrestrial services.
Breakdowns
are provided by delivery system (digital cable, digital
satellite, digital terrestrial, and DSL+FTTH), and category
(high, mid, and low). An industry analysis incorporates
assessments of leading vendors, component trends, and
key technologies impacting future form factors.
"The
market witnessed major disruption to existing supply
contracts and new business development during 2002,
resulting from adverse conditions in the core pay TV
sector. The market for reception of FTA digital terrestrial
services was one of the few bright spots in the market.
During 2003 the overall market will witness a modest
improvement, with the FTA digital terrestrial sector
continuing to outperform. IDC forecasts over 17 million
devices will ship in this market between 2003 and 2007.
Vendors reported low profitability across all market
segments. The focus on cost-down has left little prospect
for differentiating and adding value to offerings. In
many instances, devices were provided to network operators
and retail at below cost during 2002. IDC expects further
consolidation in the European industry during 2003 to
2004, as the majority of devices shipped are forecast
to remain in the low end," said Jason Armitage,
senior research analyst, European Consumer Devices and
Technologies.
