Los Angeles City Leaders Warn of Parking Enforcement Crisis, Oppose State Rules that Limit City’s Ability to Tow Violators
AMTV, LOS ANGELES, Aug 27 – Warning of its impacts to the City’s efforts to address RVs and abandoned vehicles on City streets, Councilmembers Traci Park and John Lee on Tuesday introduced a resolution in opposition to Assembly Bill 1082, a bill currently pending in the state legislature. If approved, AB 1082 would prevent cities like Los Angeles from towing vehicles with more than five parking citations, a critical tool for managing health, safety, and the City’s curb spaces.
“While well-intentioned, AB 1082 jeopardizes our ability to manage our city’s streets,” said Councilmember Park. “By removing the City’s ability to tow vehicles in violation of our parking regulations, we will turn back the progress we have made toward addressing health and safety on our streets.”
Councilmember Lee added, “One of the major concerns facing my communities in the Northwest San Fernando Valley is the proliferation of RV encampments that take advantage of the city’s lax parking enforcement rules. As the city moves toward improving safety and accessibility on our public right-of-ways, this bill will weaken our ability to enforce laws and common-sense rules that every other Angeleno has to abide by.”
AB 1082 is currently pending in the state legislature, which has until August 31, 2024, to approve bills for Governor Newsom’s signature.
